I am an elementary school teacher. I live in a growing town
near Jakarta. I am teaching English. As a teacher, I am interested in writing.
I have a thing that awakens my mind. This is the difference between Bahasa
Indonesia and English.
Indonesia is a big country. It has thousand islands. There
are many tribes and local languages. Bahasa Indonesia is the national language.
All Indonesian people speak Bahasa Indonesia. I’m very proud of using Bahasa
Indonesia but one thing that makes Bahasa Indonesia different from English has awaken
my mind.
What is the thing? The use of passive sentences in Bahasa
Indonesia is very often. I don’t know why. I think this pattern of sentence has
affected Indonesian’s customs. What is it? The use of passive sentence in
Bahasa Indonesia is very often. English often use active sentence in many
expressions. Is there any relation between active sentence and active people?
There are not any researchers that concern with this matter. In fact, using
active sentence makes sense of active feeling and expression.
Here some examples of the use passive sentence in Bahasa
Indonesia and the meaning in English.
Bahasa Indonesia :
Aduh, jariku teriris pisau ( my finger was cut by a knife)
English :
Ouch, I cut my finger.
This expression is funny. Bahasa Indonesia uses passive voice
to express of cutting finger. The meaning is that I don’t make any fault,
one who makes fault is the knife. English language has
contradictive meaning. It still blames I as the subject who has made a fault. Bahasa
Indonesia accuses the knife who cuts the finger.
Bahasa Indonesia :
Aduh, tanganku terbakar api ( my hand was burnt by fire)
English :
Ouch, I burnt my hand.
This expression in Bahasa Indonesia means that fire has
to be the accused one. In fact , I did the action
why I causes my hand burnt.
There are many expressions in Bahasa Indonesia that have the
same meaning with those two examples.
