short biography of mahathir mohamad


Reading short bio of Mahathir Mohamad can inspire us. He is called Datuk Seri Mahatir Muhamad. He was born in 1925. Dr. Mahathir married Dr. Siti Hasanah in 1956. He has seven children. They are Marina, Mirzan, Melinda, Mokhzani, Mukhriz, Maizura and Mazhar. He was a Malaysian leader who came from a humble social environment. He was a boy of a schoolteacher. He spent his child time in Alor Star, the capital city of Kedah state. He used to sell friend bananas in the market.

He went to a Malay school in Sebrang , Perak before he attended Sultan Abdul Hamid College in Alor Star. He went to medical studies in Singapore. He failed to study in England. He started his career as physician, writer, and party leader. He was a great debater. He worked in government service as a doctor on Langkawi Island. He started private practice in 1957. He won a seat in the parliament at the time in 1964.




He was closely related to the United Malay National Organization ( UMNO). He was out from the party in 1970. He wrote a notorious book “ The Malay Dilema”. He showed his political profile in it. He criticized generalization of stereotype of Malay and Chinese populations. He criticized the Prime Minister Tengku Abdul Rahman after the interethnic violence in May 1969. His book “ The Malay Dilemma “ was baned. He argued that the Malays are “definitive race”. He reentered UMNO. In June 1972 he led the votes of the election of UMNO’s Supreme council. He became the minister of education. His succession to the leadership of UMNO and the government was in July, 1981 when Tun Hussein Onn resigned for his illness. He served as the prime minister from 1981 until 2003.


Dr. Mahathir brought Malaysia as a developing country. The life of the people gained prosperity. In 1997, He fastened Malaysian Ringgit so the global market could not control the currency. This decision caused many protests from nation leaders who received fund from IMF (International Monetary Fund). In fact, Dr. Mahathir made correct decision to save his country. In his period, some Islamic institution came up and grew. They were Islamic Center, Islamic bank, International Islamic University (IIU), Malaysian Islamic Understanding, and Islamic Museum.
