How to teach young student English grammar

Most English teachers find difficulties to teach English grammar to young students. Young students will easily get bored to learn grammar. They sometimes label grammar learning as dull and useless activity. However, they can learn this hard topic but they need special treatment and methods. Young students who come from English speaking countries will learn English grammar better than they who come from non-English speaking countries. Young students from England understand English grammar lesson more easily than the ones from Korea and most Asian countries.

Most young students find learning English grammar die-hard. Teachers must recognize this situation. They need to have enough collection of teaching tips and tricks in delivering grammar lesson. They must learn how to entertain and deliver the lesson at once. They also have to provide a sort of collection of activities and lesson plans to teach English grammar, which are different from teaching other topics.

Young students’s mood will change easily when they face a boring situation of learning activities. Teachers should set the classroom and manage the time allocation well. They also should focus on one skill to master. Once the young students master the topic, go on to next topics. They should provide short stories or reading materials to entertain the learners. The short stories must contain the grammar exposure, which is being studied.

Teachers should make all young students feel fun. They are not allowed to burden them with hard exercises and grammar names to remember. They must present exercises both oral and written in correct and proper sentences. Young students are good copiers. They will copy from their teachers. They will receive wrong input too If the teachers give wrong models. Teachers moreover should arrange activities that encourage their students’ exposure to the grammar target. Proper model of dialogues, writing chests, and exercises needs to be presented.

Assessment is also important to know the percentage of the lessons that the students have obtained. It used for identifying and minimizing errors. Teachers will know where they should emphasize the topic. On the other hand, they are not allowed to interrupt or give too many red marks in grammatical errors that are not being studied. They will discourage their students by doing these.

Drilling communicative model dialogues and exercises extends students exposure the grammar target. The model dialogues and exercises must contain no errors and proper grammar so that students will use those types of models in their speaking and writing activities in the future. Young students should not know the names of the grammar sentences they use but they know the correct forms in delivering their speech and writing.

Teachers should avoid teaching grammar directly to their students. Presenting a grammar focus in front of students will only build mental block. Most young students do not like learning English grammar because grammar rules do not tolerate little mistakes even adult learners hate this direct method. This is an example of intolerant of grammar rules. When students learn subject agreements they think that their answers are correct but in fact, they make mistakes. Here is the illustration; “ My father goes to his office” Young students usually write “ My father go to his office” What students write has no different meaning from the correct grammar form. Students only make a mistake in the word “ go” it should be ‘ goes”. In fact, they have made an error and they are not to be tolerated to make this error. This intolerant rule is confusing not only for them but also for adult students

In the end, learning English grammar is necessary but young students need special dealing. All students can learn grammar. They are the best copiers so that teachers must provide them with proper and right speaking activities and writing exercises.
