How to teach young student English grammar

Most English teachers find difficulties to teach English grammar to young students. Young students will easily get bored to learn grammar. They sometimes label grammar learning as dull and useless activity. However, they can learn this hard topic but they need special treatment and methods. Young students who come from English speaking countries will learn English grammar better than they who come from non-English speaking countries. Young students from England understand English grammar lesson more easily than the ones from Korea and most Asian countries.

Most young students find learning English grammar die-hard. Teachers must recognize this situation. They need to have enough collection of teaching tips and tricks in delivering grammar lesson. They must learn how to entertain and deliver the lesson at once. They also have to provide a sort of collection of activities and lesson plans to teach English grammar, which are different from teaching other topics.

Young students’s mood will change easily when they face a boring situation of learning activities. Teachers should set the classroom and manage the time allocation well. They also should focus on one skill to master. Once the young students master the topic, go on to next topics. They should provide short stories or reading materials to entertain the learners. The short stories must contain the grammar exposure, which is being studied.

Teachers should make all young students feel fun. They are not allowed to burden them with hard exercises and grammar names to remember. They must present exercises both oral and written in correct and proper sentences. Young students are good copiers. They will copy from their teachers. They will receive wrong input too If the teachers give wrong models. Teachers moreover should arrange activities that encourage their students’ exposure to the grammar target. Proper model of dialogues, writing chests, and exercises needs to be presented.

Assessment is also important to know the percentage of the lessons that the students have obtained. It used for identifying and minimizing errors. Teachers will know where they should emphasize the topic. On the other hand, they are not allowed to interrupt or give too many red marks in grammatical errors that are not being studied. They will discourage their students by doing these.

Drilling communicative model dialogues and exercises extends students exposure the grammar target. The model dialogues and exercises must contain no errors and proper grammar so that students will use those types of models in their speaking and writing activities in the future. Young students should not know the names of the grammar sentences they use but they know the correct forms in delivering their speech and writing.

Teachers should avoid teaching grammar directly to their students. Presenting a grammar focus in front of students will only build mental block. Most young students do not like learning English grammar because grammar rules do not tolerate little mistakes even adult learners hate this direct method. This is an example of intolerant of grammar rules. When students learn subject agreements they think that their answers are correct but in fact, they make mistakes. Here is the illustration; “ My father goes to his office” Young students usually write “ My father go to his office” What students write has no different meaning from the correct grammar form. Students only make a mistake in the word “ go” it should be ‘ goes”. In fact, they have made an error and they are not to be tolerated to make this error. This intolerant rule is confusing not only for them but also for adult students

In the end, learning English grammar is necessary but young students need special dealing. All students can learn grammar. They are the best copiers so that teachers must provide them with proper and right speaking activities and writing exercises.

Florence Nightingale the founder of modern nursing

England was at war with Russian in the mid of nineteenth century. English Army was fighting in the Crimea. The times reporter, William Russel, wrote the bad condition at Scutary in Turkey. There was an old barrack there. The building was swarming with mice. There were few beds and many wounded men lying on the floor. The nurses were old soldiers, who know nothing of nursing. Even though this place was horrible, it was overcrowded.
Sidney Herbert, The minister of war, wrote to Florence Nightingale to go out to the Crimea with a group of nurses. Florence Nightingale was ready to go with thirty-eight nurses. She sailed for Scutary.
Florence Nightingale was born in Florence in 1820. She was highly educated in music, art, literature, Latin and Greek. She spoke Italian, French and German. She had nursed villagers, cats, and dogs since she was a child. Her parents did not want her to be a nurse because at her time woman of the lower society did nursing. Florence insisted to her dream.
She was interested in nursing. She visited hospitals every time she went abroad. She loved reading books of nursing, medical society, and history of hospitals. She worked some weeks at a hospital as a sister in Paris. She took three months nursing schools at Kaiserwerth in Germany. Finally, her mother agreed to Florence being superintendent of an “Establishment for Gentlewomen during illness” in Harley street. Florence was living there when the Crimean war broke out.
She arrived at Scutary. The condition was terrible. There were no bandages, few medicines, and lack of food. She brought a lot of food and medical supplies. She sometime spent her money for boots, socks, blankets, shirts, because of the army regulations; she could not supply essential stores immediately. She did not care about the regulations.
She often worked over time, dressing wounds, helping surgeons in operation and comforting the dying. Soldiers knew her as “ Lady with the lamp”. She and her nurses cooked the best meal, scrubbed floors and walls. She did a great job. The rate of death fell from sixty every one thousand to three every one thousand.
She became Inspector of all hospitals in the Crimea in 1856. She got fever but continued her work from her bed. She went home in 1856 after peace was declared. She brought changes in English life.
Even though she had the same opposition from “ officials” she got support from Queen Victoria. She changed the whole system of hospital organization of the army. She reformed the health service in India. She wrote books of nursing. She opened the Nightingale Training School for nurses at St. Thomas’s Hospital, now one of the finest in the world. She received merit the highest civil honour in 1907. She died in 1910.

Horace Austin Warner Tabor

Leadville is a unique and highest city in the United States. It is about 10,000 feet above sea level. It is in the Rocky Mountains. It is an old city. It has long story. In the late 1890s, there were 40,000 people living in there. There are romantic and glamour stories from the city. The big hotel, Tabor Opera House and saloon are the glamour.
The story began from a man named H.A.W Tabor. He had a second wife. Her name was Elizabeth  Mc.Cart, known as “ Baby Doe”. Tabor and Baby Doe were the legend of the old west. Horace Austin Warner Tabor was a schoolteacher in Vermont. He went to Homestead in Kansas by covered wagon in 1855. He might be lured by rumors of fortunes in Colorado mines. Few years late he moved to a small Colorado mining camp. It was called California Gulch which he later renamed Leadville when he became its leading citizen.
Tabor was not a miner. He opened a store. He sold everything. He sold salt, sugar, tobacco and boots. Tabor also supplied “grub” for miners who were looking for ore in return he would get a share in the mine. He got no one found a mine.
The story started from 1878. Two miners asked for grub but Tabor had stopped supplying it because he spent too much money on it. The two miners insisted to get the grub. In the end, Tabor had seventeen-dollar worth of supply in return he would get a one-third share in the two miners finding.
The two miners began to dig. After nine days, they struck a rich vein of silver. Tabor bought the shares of the other two men. Finally, he owned 100 % of the mine. It was called Pittsburg Mine. It was worth $1,300,000 in return for seventeen dollars.
Tabor bought the Matchless Mine for $117,000. It became bigger than Pittsburg. It produced $ 35,000 worth of silver per day. Leadville grew. Tabor became lieutenant governor of the state.
He met Baby Doe, a girl with blonde curly hair and big blue eyes. He got divorced with his first wife and secretly married Baby Doe. He gave $ 1,200,000 as divorce settlement.  Later he was the United States senator. Tabor and Baby Doe married publicly in a big ceremony in Washington. Mr. Chester A Arthur , President of the United States attended the wedding party.
Tabor was 53 and Baby Doe was 21. They spend $ 10,000 for honeymoon. Tabor  gave Isabella Diamond for Doe as a wedding gift. He wore $ 250 nightshirt. He and his wife moved to Denver where he built million-dollar opera house.
In 1893, the United States no longer used silver as coinage. The price of silver was down. Tabor could not afford to run the Matchless Mine. He got bankrupt because he spent all his money in glamour. He had to work as a day laborer while his first wife lived comfortably with $ 1,200,000.
In 1899, Tabor died. He said to his Doe to reopen the Matchless. Baby Doe did what his husband told her. In 1935, a 73-year-old woman died in the mine.

traditional chess from Java

I often play this traditional chess when I was a kid. I live in a small village in central Java, Indonesia. I do not know if there is a similar game like this now. I also do not find this traditional game in other provinces in Indonesia. If anyone has the same game like this, please leave me a comment here! This game can be played anywhere because you can use stones and draw the chess board on the ground or on the floor. I do not see children playing this game anymore in my village. That is a pity. I think it can be extinct. Let’s play the game, read and learn the instruction below!

Traditional Javanese Chest ( Dam-daman/ Macanan)
Players : Two children / Adults
Time : Unlimited
Equipment:  1 Big Stone, 15 Small Stones,  a Chest board( Drawing board on the floor with a chalk)

How to play

This is the chest board. This is the starting position. There are fifteen small stones and one the big one. If you are creative enough you can create the hunters and the giant from more attractive materials. See the picture 1!
Rules of the game
A hunter and the Giant can only move one pace. Both can move forward, backward or diagonal following the line. The Giant can only eat if it can jump over a hunter one pace. When the hunter is eaten, it should be removed. The Giant will die if it cannot move and cannot eat any hunters.

The Giant can eat by jumping over the hunter: see the picture 2! It can eat following horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. It jumps over a hunter, then the hunter is removed. Look at the green line!

The Giant will die if either it cannot move nor eat any hunters. The hunters will win the game if the Giant dies. When the Giant is able to eat up all the hunters or the number of the hunters is impossible to kill the Giant, the Giant wins the game. See picture 3!
