As teachers, you need to make your classroom alive and conducive. You sometimes find difficulties to attract students’ attention. When you are at the first minutes to start a class, students cannot concentrate well. In teaching, there is a trick to get students’ attention. There is a situation that you should create where students’ mind are free from anything. That situation is named alpha zone. Ice breaking activities can send students to this quiet state of mind. Here is some collection of ice breaking activities that I have practiced in my classroom.
1. You can play concentration games. Students must count number from one to twenty but they must replace number four and multiple four with a word “ BUZZ”. There is always a student who makes a mistake. The student who makes mistakes will get a funny punishment. As teachers, you must know what funny thing to do or to say in your classroom.
2. You can show funny pictures. You search photos on the internet and print them. Then, you wrap the photos. Students are not allowed to know the photos. The first photo is a fat boy, the second one is a handsome man, the third one is a funny girl, and the last one is a beautiful girl. You can choose photos of artist or actor in your country. The fat boy or the funny girl can be a comedian so that the students will break into laughter when they see the photo.
What should you do with the photos? Before you start a class after greeting, you ask your students “ Do you know who is the most beautiful or handsome artist in our country?” students will answer “yes” then ask one of the students “ Who is your favorite actor?” the student will answer excitedly. “ Today I have some photos of very beautiful and handsome actors and artists “ Do you want to know who they are? “ “I am afraid you will fall in love with one of them” students will say “ wooooo”
Then you say “ The first picture . is he handsome or is she beautiful? “ students will answer noisily “ beautiful , handsome” Ask the students “ Who will fall in love with the person? raise your hand” some students will raise their hands. You say “ OK, Let’s open the picture, Three , two , one” here it is . You show the fat boy. All students will laugh crowdedly. Then you continue to next pictures.
3. You can use funny videos if you use multimedia to help us deliver your lesson. Many videos you can find in youtube, you can download and save them in your files. At the first minute before you start the lesson, you can turn on the videos; here are some videos you can try.
4. You can post a word then students respond with the related word. For example you say “ banana” the students may respond “ monkey, or yellow” then you can try “ hippo” the students will respond “ big” after few words and few students you choose a student who is provocative and funny. Ask him or her “ a name of the most beautiful actress in your country “ you will see funny and spontaneous response that make class giggle.
5. You can tell funny stories. Some students will enjoy listening a story but you cannot tell funny story very often. You can practice this once a month. You must have many collections of funny stories. Many sites you can search on the internet. You must choose the story that is suitable with the students’ age.
6. You can ask short five questions that can test your students’ knowledge. Questions that do not have correlation to the lesson are ok. For instance; “Who is the president of India? What is the longest river in the world? Who is the star of Harry Potter film? Where is the great wall? What the biggest animal in the world?” you can write down the questions before a class or in your lesson plan.
7. You can ask funny brainteaser. For example “ What is this? It is small, black and get sweated? All students will find the answer as if you are serious. If the students cannot answer now, your turn to answer, “the answer is an ant which is doing exercise” this funny question may have not sense of humor in your country but it has high sense of humor for my children. You can find funny questions that high sense of humor then practice in your classroom.
8. You can make a paper ball from unused papers. This is suitable for elementary school students. Then, you throw the ball to a student to catch it. Ask a question about anything that makes him/ her feel happy. You can also give a puzzle. After the student catches the ball ask him/her to pitch the ball to you. You can repeat to other students. You don’t have to pitch the ball to all students but few students.
9. You can also play a magic trick. If you have a magic trick, you can show in front of the class before the lesson starts. Share the secret to do the trick and ask some students to practice in front of the class. You can also use cards or some tools to practice.
10. Write friends’ names as many as possible. Ask your student to take a piece of paper then ask them to write down their friends’ names as many as possible in one, two or three minutes. Give appreciation to a student who can write more friends. You should count the time before you start. You can use stopwatch or clock on the wall of the class.
