short biography of colonel sanders

Everyone Knows Kentucky Friend Chicken. It is a chicken restaurant, which has branches all over the world. The logo of the restaurant is unique. It is a picture of an old man. Do you know the founder of the restaurant? He is Harland David Sanders.

His name is Harland David Sanders. He was born on September 9, 1890 in Henryville, Indiana, U.S. He died on December 16, 1980 in Louisville, Kentucky, U.S. His father is Wilbur David Sanders and his mother is Margaret Ann Sanders. Sanders is an Irish name.

Wilbur David Sanders was a farmer. He could not do more jobs because he broke his leg and back. In 1895 he died due to a fever. Sanders’ mother worked in a food factory. Sanders had to take care of two siblings in his young age. He could not afford to continue his school at the age of 12. His mother married again in 1902. His stepfather was cruel to him so his mother put him in his uncle.

Sanders enlisted the U.S. army when he was 15. He gave his service only for months in Cuba. He moved to Sheffield, Alabama in his uncle house. His brother followed him after that. Sanders worked as steamboat pilot, salesman, railroad fireman and farmer in his early career.

Sanders met Josephine King and married her in 1908. His marriage was not long. His wife divorced him. He had three children. His son, Harland Jr. died at young age. Sanders also had two daughters. Their names were Margaret Sanders and Mildred Sanders.

When he was 40 he run a service station in Corbin, Kentucky. He served meal for travelers who refilled the gas. He did not operate a restaurant yet. Most of his customers brought the food. Sanders had idea to serve meal that travelers could take with them. He named “ Sunday dinner” The concept of his service is to take and carry.

His chicken cooking was very popular. He then moved to his operation close to a motel. The new restaurant had 142 seats. Sanders’ chicken was well known around the state. In 1935 , the Governor Rubby Laffoon prized him the title of Kentucky Colonel. He then developed his cooking recipe. That was called “secret recipe”. There were 11 herbs and spices in it. Sanders also used quick frying method to fry his chicken.

The government constructed new road in Corbin. Sanders sold his chicken restaurant. He lost his asset and lived in hard situation. He still kept his secret recipe. He travelled around the U.S to offer partnership with a restaurant to sell his chicken. After getting many negative responses, he met Pete Harman in South Salt Lake, Utah. Sanders and Harman opened their first restaurant “Kentucky fried Chicken”.

Not long after he reopened his restaurant, his chicken’s taste became popular. The restaurant grew fast. In 1960s, there were over 400 branches over U.S and Canada. In 1965, Sanders shared his company with John Y. Brown for $2 million joint venture. In his old age, he established the Colonel Harland Sander Trust and Colonel Harland Sanders Charitable Organization. Those foundations aimed to aid and fund scholarships and charities. Sanders died in December 16, 1980 due to pneumonia in Louisville, Kentucky. His manuscript of cooking was stored in KFC archives.
