The ability to tell true stories has played an undeniably important role in the development of mankind. Before humans could express themselves in writing, telling short stories with moral components was the only way they could share experiences and lessons learned.
By telling stories our ancestors told their children how to survive the harsh conditions they lived in, and by telling stories people could share their knowledge to others so their lessons learned did not die with the narrator. It is not for nothing that our brain is more capable of remembering things when they are related to a story. Trying to remember more than seven random items is a harsh task for most of us, but if someone tells you a story with more than seven items in it, it suddenly gets much easier to remember them. Incidentally, the same positive effect can be reached by using music in a similar fashion.
Even today stories form part of an important base for communication between people. But the way stories are told is changing in the modern age. Fifty years ago people could only spread their stories through word of mouth, books, presentations, newspapers or in a theatrical performance. In the modern world we can also tell our short stories to read through blogs, twitter, e-mail, websites and storysites.
Although stories do not necessary need to be about true events, we can surely learn the most from true stories. For this reason, biographies are very popular - a vast number of books and storysites are available focusing on the lives of real people. By reading a biography the reader gets more knowledge about the experiences a given person has had that led them to success. The reader can learn or be inspired by these experiences to improve their own situation or status.
As with other stories, the way biographies are distributed has changed a lot over the last decades. A William Shakespeare biography a hundred years ago could only be found in a book form or maybe in a theatre. In the modern time there are several ways to find biographical information about Shakespeare. For modern persons it could even be hard to find a biography in a book form. Try to find a Tupac Shakur biography in book form and youll be disappointed whilst there is loads of biographical information about him on the Internet.
But sharing experiences is not only relevant for important or famous people. Everybody has experiences that others can learn from or are fun to share. Whether they are short stories for high school, funny short stories or short stories with moral messages, sharing them is fun for the writer and interesting for the reader. As our memories fade with time, sharing them is also a way for the writer to remember them and not forget the details of the happening. Sharing stories is also very easy as nowadays there are several storysites where you can write down and share your personal stories.
